Insider Guide To San Juan Del Sur!

sabrina must insider guide to san juan del sur nicaragua
My favorite part of Nicaragua was San Juan del Sur which isn’t surprising since my trifecta is the ocean, sunshine, and a bikini. Naturally, I was all over this spot. You can take a bus from Granada/Masaya to Rivas (about 2 hours) and then transfer to another bus into San Juan Del Sur. You can also book a shuttle with other travelers, which is the more popular option, and costs around $8, which is a great way to meet others! After you arrive, use my  Insider Guide To San Juan Del Sur to navigate this fun town!

Best Hotels In San Juan Del Sur san juan del sur nicaragua

I rented a private room in a house, which was great because it had A/C. But, since I was traveling with only Monkey, I kind of regretted not staying at a hotel to meet more people. These are some the most social hotels in San Juan Del Sur that I’d recommend you check out!

Hotel Alcazar

Across from the beach and blocks from the city center, Hotel Alcazar is a clean, well-kept option. Even has a pool.

Barrio Cafe Hotel

As I mention below, the Barrio Cafe Hotel doubles as a hotel and restaurant. Rooms are clean, and it’s in a perfect location if you want to be in the thick of things.

Surfing Donkey Hostel

If you’re on a budget and don’t care much about staying in a super clean hotel, the Surfing Donkey Hostel is a must. This is where most of the travelers flock, so you’ll meet people, have fun, and some consider the rooftop bar is the place to be at night.

Surf Breaks In San Juan Del Sur san juan del sur surf I remember thinking, Holy shit! These waves are HUGE!

Many travel to Nicaragua for the surf…for good reason! Warm weather, warm waves. And San Juan del Sur is the spot. I was there in summer 2015, so I had not yet ever surfed. You can sign up for surf schools or simply rent a board and figure it out on your own, which is what I opted to do! There are multiple breaks up and down the Pacific coast close by. Each spot had a little restaurant/bar on the beach so you can make a day trip of it. Be sure to check out all three of these:
  • Playa Maderas, the most popular surf break and north of San Juan Del Sur.
  • Playa Hermosa, I skipped this spot because the waves were way too big that day for beginners.
  • Playa Remanzo, down a long dirt road; this is where I went my second surf day and got completely wrecked, but the beach was so beautiful!

Grub It Out In San Juan Del Sur san juan del sur nicaragua

Just as it was in Granada, the food in San Juan del Sur was eclectic—not just local Nicaraguan cuisine. Here were a few of my personal favorite restaurants in San Juan Del Sur.

Buddha Garden

For veggie lovers and those on a health-kick, head over to Buddha Garden. Delicious and fresh! Plus the atmosphere is airy and chill.

El Timon

Every Thursday night, El Timon puts on a cultural night with dancing. Grab food before, stay for the party after! You’ll be right on the beach so you won’t be disappointed!

Barrio Cafe

In the main part of town, Barrio Cafe is both an eatery and a hotel. The cafe is open and clean with decent food. I liked their home fries!
